Abstract

Emergent coding and constant comparative analysis were used to analyze 14 pairs of kindergarteners’ approach, social interactions, and comprehension depth when reading iPad app books, and their changes across time. Children used three approaches--hotspot-centric, text-centric, and integrated, which were differentially related to comprehension depth. Social interactions were related to changes over time. Findings inform instructional planning for multimodal reading in early childhood.
