Abstract
Vibrational relaxation in a supersonic nozzle expansion has been investigated for the case of linear molecules seeded in argon, expanded through a 25 μm diameter aperture. Electric resonance spectroscopy was used to obtain vibrational temperatures for 13 different vibrational states in OCS, HCN, and cyanoacetylene. No significant vibrational cooling was observed for modes with vibrational frequencies greater than 500 cm-1.
