Abstract
Samples of airborne particulate material are classified with respect to particle size and time during their collection by inertial impaction. Infrared spectroscopic analysis is used to measure the major chemical constituents of the samples. Initial results clearly show variations in the chemistry of airborne particulates as a function of particle size and time. These results support recent theories on the origin of particulates that have been based on size distribution measurements and may be important in assessing the potential health hazard of particulates and in evaluating the appropriateness of control techniques.
