Abstract
A practical system that deliberately introduces flexibility to the first storey of structures is described. The system utilizes Teflon sliders to carry a portion of the superstructure. Energy dissipation is provided by the first storey columns without sliders and by the Teflon sliders. The response characteristics of a multi-storey structure utilizing this concept are calculated and discussed. The results show that it is possible to provide effective protection to the superstructure while maintaining the stability of the first storey.
