Abstract
The Passive and Hybrid Solar Commercial Buildings Program performs three primary functions: it supports research and development; it promotes the utilization of proven passive concepts and technology; and it sponsors educational and training programs. All of these functions are directed toward the four major uses of energy in commercial buildings: heating, cooling, lighting and domestic hot water. Finally, all of the work in the program is focused on two methods of intervention into the business of building commercial structures: the architectural and engineering design of commercial buildings, and the manufacture of building components (products) and subsystems. This paper describes the program functions, directions and methods of intervention using examples of past and current projects, as well as identifying projects currently under development.
