Toward an Understanding of “Math Parenting Identity”: Parent Perceptions of the Home Math Environments of Young Children

Abstract

Unveiling a pioneering concept, this research introduces “Math Parenting Identity” (MPI) as an important determinant in the foundational math experiences that take place in the home math environments of young learners prior to the onset of formal schooling in kindergarten. Engaging a national sample of 847 parents of 4 to 5-year-olds, the study employs the RESET framework to explore the existence and complexity of MPI. It articulates important implications for parent decision-making and motivations in fostering the early math learning of their children and provides a new survey instrument to deepen our understanding of how parental beliefs and behaviors not only shape parents' own MPI, but also children's earliest encounters with mathematics.
