N2 - The challenge of designing large complex systems such as the NASA Space Launch System, the Boeing 787, or the Navy's Littoral Combat Ship is usually left to the province of systems engineering. However, about 90% of the engineering effort in these programs is performed by other disciplines, primarily design engineers. This paper brings to the fore the critical nature of design engineering and recent advances that hold promise for improving the design of large-scale complex engineered systems.
