Abstract
To the modern reader, Bibb’s experience must seem absurd on at least two major counts: how could he believe such devices would function? and after he saw they didn’t help him, why didn’t he learn from experience that the conjure doctor’s advice was not only not helpful but sometimes downright dangerous to him?.
