Abstract

This chapter provides a systematic semantic account of the evidential and mood suffixes in Korean. It is argued that the Korean evidential marker, which provides new but backgrounded information, can be categorized as ‘not-at-issue’ content that directly updates the Common Ground. The Korean mood markers, on the other hand, determine the force of the ‘at-issue’ proposition, and are uniformly analyzed in terms of their common context-updating function of operating on the possible worlds in Common Ground. The update process is formally modelled in Discourse Representation Theory.
