Abstract
The essay explores the ways the idea of the ‘frontier’ allows for settlers to envision a space within the boundaries of the state, yet beyond its jurisdiction. In this way, the concept of the frontier translates the ongoing institutional exceptionalization of Native peoples and lands into a space of settler possibility.
