Abstract
Anti-bullying efforts are often aimed at encouraging bystanders to act as defenders of victims of peer aggression. This chapter describes different types of defending behaviors including bully-oriented and victim-oriented strategies. Child-level and contextual correlates of defending are identified. The potential of bystanders to assist in bullying prevention and intervention efforts is emphasized while the authors are careful to highlight the need for these programs to consider the well-being of defenders as well as victims.
