Abstract

Like many academic health centers (AHCs) in the United States, the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is currently undergoing a major transformation to maintain its leadership position in the evolving health care landscape. Academic health care enterprises are evolving into high-value, integrated, transparent systems that effectively compete for a market share and can impact the health of large populations. Patient care is increasingly moving out of fixed institutional and office settings and into wherever the patient happens to be. This chapter will explore how the changing dynamics of patient care, including large data sets and by teams, are impacting AHCs. Topics covered include the emerging delivery system science, the role of faculty, team care, creative partnerships, and payment models that will change the nature of AHCs' care delivery models.
