Abstract

Recently, the advancements in nanotechnology and better understanding of the BBB physiology have promoted the use of nanoparticles for targeted delivery across the BBB for therapy of neuronal diseases/disorders. This review summarizes the applications of several classes of novel nanoparticles to blood-brain barrier (BBB) for therapy, diagnosis, dynamic imaging, and multifunctional mode, including the materials, functions characteristics, as well as their current research status. Our recent progress on visualization of targeted nanoparticle delivery across BBB is also introduced. Finally, the research trend of using nanoparticles for transmigration across BBB and treatment of brain diseases has been highlighted.
