Abstract

This report describes our efforts at synthesizing MnIIIF3 complexes with pnictogen-oxide ylide (PnO) ligands. Although no PnO coordination resulted, we isolated and characterized the mixed halide Mn(III) complex (TAS)2[MnIIICl3F2] (2) (TAS: tris(dimethylamino)sulfonium cation). The molecular dianion of 2 is a rare example of a mixed fluoride/chloride and is isostructural with the trigonal bipyramidal pentachloromanganate(III) dianion. The chlorido ligands are equatorial, and the fluoride ligands are axial. Complex 2 is not reactive toward the weak C–H bonds in dihydroanthracene in contrast to other MnIIIX3 complexes (X = Cl, NO3).
