Abstract

Halomethylidyne clusters H3M33-CX) (CO)9 (M = Ru, X = Cl, Br; M = Os, X = Br) are prepared by treatment of H3M33-COCH3)(CO)9 with the corresponding boron trihalide. The ruthenium cluster H3Ru33-CBr)(CO)9 reacts with AlCl3 and then methanol to give H3Ru33-CCO2CH3)(CO)9 and with AlCl3 in C6H5R (R = H, CH3) to give H3Ru3-(μ3-CC6H5R)(CO)9. Under basic conditions the cluster forms H3Ru33-COC2H5)(CO)9 with ethanol and HRu3(μ-CN-(C2H5)2)(CO)10 with diethylamine. With tri-n-butyltin hydride, HRu33-CH)(CO)9 is prepared from the bromide derivative.
