Abstract
We review the self-assembly of surfactants and polymers in aqueous solutions, with a focus on polymers that are hydrophobically-modified. We start from dilute systems, where we examine association between polymer chains and formation of mixed micelles between the surfactant and the polymer hydrophobes, we explain the viscosifying effects that surfactants can have on polymer solutions, and then move on to consider surfactant-polymer systems that may undergo macroscopic phase separation, and concentrated systems where the polymer is embedded into ordered structures formed by the surfactant. Finally, we present examples on how surfactants affect the behavior of water-borne systems containing various types of polymers.
