Abstract
An extensive series of acrylonitrile-methyl methacrylate (AN-MMA) copolymers has previously been prepared; the bulk properties of this series were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission IR spectroscopy. The series includes statistical copolymers and 'blocky' copolymers (average PAN sequence lengths >100). The entire series, including the addition of several AN-MMA block copolymers, has now been examined by various surface sensitive techniques, primarily angle-resolved ESCA and attentuated total reflectance IR (ATR-FTIR). In general, the surface composition of the series differed from that of the bulk phase and these variations provide insight into the factors controlling surface segregation in multicomponent polymers.
