Abstract
The current state-of-the-art in CRLH integration for feed networks leading to wide-band circular polarization (CP) antennas and arrays is studied. A unique aspect discussed throughout was the balance between bandwidth and phase-error penalties. Based on the analysis presented, one could also design the CRLH networks to meet a maximum phase-error requirement. For the array example, we combined the exotic phase characteristics of composite right/left-handed transmission lines (CRLH-TL) and the wide bandwidth enabled by capacitive compensation to develop a high-performance CP antenna array with an AR less than 1 dB over a 40% bandwidth. The measured prototype demonstrated high-quality CP performance with good radiation patterns and directivity. Achieving this low AR performance over wide bandwidths with patch-antenna arrays is difficult to realize with other techniques.
