Abstract

Nickel filaments of diameter 0.5 μm and length > 100 μm and containing 90 vol.% Ni and 10 vol.% C were fabricated by electroplating 0.1-0.2 μm diameter carbon filaments with nickel. Due to their size diameter and large aspect ratio, they were more effective than nickel fibers of diameter 20 μm and length 1000 μm in providing polymer-matrix composites of low electrical resistivity and high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness when the filler volume fraction was < 15%. Due to their high conductivity compared to carbon filaments of diameter 0.1 - 0.2 μm and length > 100 μm, they were more effective than the carbon filaments when the filler volume fraction was ≥ 7%. Polyether sulfone was the thermoplast polymer used in all the composites.
