Abstract
The growth of damage in terms of size and/or severity in structure is referred to as damage dynamics. Since conventionally defined modal parameters may not be sensitive enough to detect earlier damage, it is necessary to find a more sensitive quantity with good measurement repeatability to implement this task. In this paper, a newly defined modal parameter, the energy transfer ratio (ETR), is introduced especially for the study on damage dynamics. By testing a model bridge experimentally, the damage growth vs. the changes of modal energy is investigated. It is found that ETR has a good potential for damage growth measurement.
