Abstract

Stress generation refers to the processes by which individuals can contribute to the stress that they experience in their lives. Characteristics and qualities of individuals can lead to the likelihood that they encounter objectively adverse, stressful circumstances in their lives. Such characteristics also may increase the degree to which subjective stress and distress are experienced following such life events. In turn, this generated life stress potentially contributes to the onset, maintenance, and recurrence of episodes of psychopathology, such as depression. © 2007
