Abstract
Recent studies have shown that the interlaminar shear strength of brominated carbon fiber-epoxy composites is 18% greater than its pristine counterpart, although the mechanical properties of the fibers themselves are not affected by bromination. Intercalation is another means by which graphite-polymer composites can be strengthened, even more substantially. The combination of a graphitic carbon, which can be truly intercalated, and furfuryl alcohol (instead of epoxy) as the polymer, can bring out this effect so clearly that the tensile strength is increased by 167%.
