Jean Crespin’s Book of Martyrs, a touchstone text for the Calvinist movement that preserves for the community a record of the religious violence it endured, contains a liminary sonnet that suggests the modes of sensory access to the profound spiritual message that the volume contains: Sur la constance des fideles martyrs En ce grand feu la grande patience, Qui en mourant fait le soldat vainqueur, Esmeut en moi l’oeil, l’oreille et le coeur, Quand je le voi, quand je l’oi, quand j’y pense. Je voi souffrir avec joye et constance, J’oi chanter haut en extreme douleur. Je pense alors que de Dieu la grandeur Luit en l’obscur de l’humaine impuissance. Si l’on veut donc d’un vrai profit jouir, Ce n’est assez, & de voir & d’ouïr; Car au penser est l’utilité toute.
