Abstract

Two types of silicon nitride based ceramic composites with enhanced properties have been prepared. The SiC-Si3N4 nano-composite with the strength of 1203 MPa, fracture toughness of 6.9 MPa · M1/2, and Weibul modulus of 19. The fracture toughness of β-Si3N4 whisker reinforced Si3N4 composite increased from 7.2 to the 8.9 MPa · m1/2, after coating of used whiskers by BN.
