Abstract

In this paper, we present a technique for making selections in a complex, multi-faceted design environment, and illustrate its usefulness in the design of a V/STOL aircraft. Selection occurs all along the design time-line. In the early stages, there is almost no hard data; most of the data is soft. As we move along a design time-line, the qualitative ratio of hard to soft information increases. We therefore propose a process involving two types of selection, namely, preliminary selection followed by selection. In this paper, we are concerned introducing a process for use in a multi-disciplinary design environment rather than the results per se.
