Abstract

Recent research has shown that a relatively thin layer of external coating applied to the wall surface has excellent properties as a retrofit/repair method. This paper highlights procedures involving thin reinforced coatings and, in particular a new process using a thin layer of heavily reinforced ferrocement. Results of testing carried out at the State University of New York at Buffalo indicate that the ferrocement developed substantial ductility and strength for the seismic strengthening of masonry walls. Examples of the use of ferrocement for various structures using both the ATC and UBC codes are also included.
