Abstract
This article examines the relationship between small groups and their scapegoats, viewing it as a two-way transaction. Protective intervention by the workerin defense of the scapegoatis termed pre-emptive intervention. The card game bridge is used to help understand the cause and effect of such intervention. A suggested alternative intervention, illustrated by practice records, is related to the reciprocal social work model.
