Retinopathy of prematurity

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) continues to be a puzzling disease. Although recognized back in 1942, it remains a common disease in very low-birth-weight premature babies today. Despite new understanding regarding its pathogenesis, and the development of new treatments in the last decade, blindness still occurs. This blindness not only results from ROP itself but also from the associated conditions. We must continue to work toward new preventives and interventions while striving to maintain the standard of care.
