Abstract
More research is needed on the opportunities, dynamics and challenges of urban retail. How do retail agglomeration, stratification and compatibility affect retail success and failure? We need an updated typology of urban retail dynamics. As retailers increasingly coexist with bars and restaurants on urban streets, what kind of mix is successful? Researchers need to expand the current focus on abstract demographics, spreadsheet analysis and standardized site selection processes. Much could be learned from European and American evolutions in spatial research. Furthermore, the correlation between urban retail revitalization and gentrification and homogenization needs further study.
