Abstract

Aspiration pneumonia (AP) is one of the feared results of dysphagia which occurs commonly in older adults. Despite progress in identifying risk factors and understanding of the microbiology of AP, a clear definition of the disease is lacking, leading to a confusion in its management. AP is best considered not as a distinct entity, but as part of a continuum of community-acquired pneumonia or hospital-acquired pneumonia. This chapter will discuss recent advances in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of AP.
