Abstract
Model-based diagnostic expert systems need knowledge representation of spatial structure and function. The authors argue that a semantic network representation is an effective approach to this problem and supports diagnostic reasoning, interactive graphics, image analysis, and natural language interfaces. As a case in point, the authors describe the neuroanatomic module of an expert system for neurologic diagnosis, NEUREX, currently under development.
