Abstract

Kidney problems are not commonly associated with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). We present the first report of a child with CVID and steroid-responsive nephrotic syndrome and review the published literature on renal disease in CVID. Survey studies suggest that renal disease has a prevalence of 2% among CVID patients. Acute renal failure from IVIG therapy, nephrotic syndrome from secondary amyloidosis, and kidney dysfunction from granulomatous interstitial nephritis appear to be directly related to CVID or its treatment, while additional information will be needed to make causal connections between CVID and other reported renal diseases including the current case.
