Abstract
Mangrove forests are very unique, productive, and economically important habitats that are severely threatened by coastal development, non-renewable resource exploitation and human-caused alteration of climate. The remote sensing of mangrove forests has developed greatly over the last six decades. In this chapter, we provide a detailed illustration of how remote sensing has been implemented in mapping mangrove forest distribution, inverting biophysical variables and characterizing ecological processes, and more recently investigating human and natural disturbances. In addition, we discuss the new directions for favoring studies over large areas and various associated products followed by our thoughts on remaining issues and future developments.
