Abstract
This paper is concerned with chemical reactions between charcoal and carbon dioxide which take place during coal gasification and direct combustion processes. A diffusion cell technique is described which has been developed at Brookhaven for measuring the chemical rates in the diffusion/chemical reaction combined-controlled region and the technique has been applied to studies of the kinetics of the reactions between CO//2 and a nuclear graphite in the temperature range of 1200-1600 degree C. In this paper, the authors report the initial results of the kinetics of the same reaction at a total pressure of 1 atm using coal chars of varying rank. Kinetic data, obtained from measured values by the application of the binary-diffusion equation, are plotted for the three coal samples and the leached lignite at selected temperatures. The results are discussed in terms of practical considerations.
