Abstract
Infrared emission spectra of CO produced by high temperature oxidation of carbon on Pt show that CO is desorbed in as high as the 7th vibrational level. The experimental vibrational energy distribution is matched to a prior distribution expected for an analogous gas phase reaction. The number of vibrational degrees of freedom of the reaction complex involved in energy partitioning is estimated.
