Abstract

The effect of ligand substitution on the metal-metal bonding in the complexes M2(CO)10-n (CNCH3)n (M = Mn, Re) has been investigated by studying the metal-metal stretching mode in the Raman spectra. The result obtained suggests that CNCH3 substitution weakens the metalmetal bond. This is related to the increased π-electron repulsion in the CNCH3 substituted complexes. A study of the temperature dependence of the metal-metal stretching band shows the anharmonic nature of this motion.
