Abstract
The Tension Leg Platform (TLP) is a floating structure connected to anchors fixed in the seabed by vertical mooring lines (legs) at each of its corners. In order to provide resistance to horizontal as well as vertical and rotational motions, the mooring legs carry a large tensile force applied to the upper ends by excess buoyancy. In addition to this force, the legs can also experience very high tension variations during extreme loading episodes. In this paper, the use of active pulse control for insuring safety of the TLP mooring system during severe loading episodes is proposed. The method consists of generating control forces in a feedback fashion using pulse generators located at the corners of the platform. A general pulse control algorithm covering the case of resonant as well as nonresonant response is analyzed.
