Pubertal disorders: Psychology and clinical management

Comprehensive treatment of a child with a pubertal disorder requires a pediatric endocrinologist and a psychoendocrinologist. Psychologic and behavioral consequences are associated with endocrine disorders of puberty. These problems are syndrome specific. The presence of a psychologist knowledgeable about these conditions can assist the pediatric endocrinologist in evaluating whether hormonal therapy is warranted, as in the case of delayed puberty, or if surgery is needed, as in the case of gynecomastia. Such a psychologist can offer beneficial counseling to children and their families.
