Abstract
It appears that psychiatric outcome at the end of the 19th century was influenced by several interrelated variables; psychiatric variables (e.g., diagnosis, duration of attack, and current belief systems), patient variables (e.g., age), and societal variables (e.g., source of support and profession). These same classes of variables seem to be operating today with the major difference being changes in professional and societal beliefs.
