Abstract

The outermost valence state of N2, the X 2σ+g state, was investigated as a photon frequency bandwidth function for core excitation to the N 1s → π* resonance. The photon frequency in between the first two vibrational levels of this band intermediate electronic state was tuned. A strong, nontrivial dependence of the resulting resonant photoemission spectral profile was found on the monochromator function width and the frequency of its peak position. Vibrational fine structure in the final electron spectrum was observed for narrow bandwidth excitation.
