Abstract
Nonstationary stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBS) is studied in SF6 gas for pressures between 10 bar and 22 bar. The highest reflectance of the SBS cells is observed at gas pressures just below saturation vapor pressure. Energy reflectivities larger than 90% are obtained with 10 ns Nd:YAG-laser pulses for pump energies larger than 80 mJ at 22 bar SF6 pressure. The experimental results are compared with analytical and numerical calculations.
