Physical modeling study of the Niagara River plume

Abstract

A rotating laboratory facility is used to study the dynamics of the Niagara River discharge into Lake Ontario. The current tests are limits to buoyant discharge conditions, which occur over a significant portion of the year. A distoroted scale model of the lake is used and results are presented from several preliminary experiments which demonstrate the ability of the model to reproduce important features of the plume, primarily its clockwise rotation and subsequent formation of a near-shore current along the southern coastline.
