Abstract

YBa 2Cu 3-xNb xO y (for x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) films were deposited on LaAlO 3 (100), MgO(100) and SrTiO 3(100) crystals using pulsed laser deposition. The effect of, substrate type, substrate(heater block) temperature were studied systematically. Films were characterized using X Ray diffraction, AC Susceptability, Atomic Force Microscopy, X-ray Photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM) and micro-Raman Spectroscopy. XRD of the films deposited at 850°C show single phase YBa 2Cu 2NbO 8 (YBCNO) formation for x = 1. XPS data suggested that there is no copper oxide segregation in these films from the binding energies of copper. Micro-Raman Spectroscopy analysis suggests that there is a transformation of orthorhombic phase to either tetragonal phase or cubic phase for varying Nb composition from 0.25 to 1.0. TEM analysis confirms the phase formation of YBCNO film deposited at 800°C using a laser pulse energy of 650 mJ on SrTiO 3(100) substrate. We report the substitution of Nb at Cul site for the first time in thin films.
