Abstract

"Petulia," a provocative film set in San Francisco during the 1967 Summer of Love, is a study of two people trying to escape from unsatisfying lives at a time of cultural upheaval. Dr. Archie Bollen, a middle-aged father of two about to be divorced, wanted desperately "to feel something." Petulia Danner, the young wife of a plastic pretty boy who lives off the wealth of his parents, wanted an affair. Theirs is an improbable and difficult-to-categorize involvement. From the point of view of environmental historians, "Petulia" is a reminder of the continuing difficulty in seeing across the nature /culture divide.
