Abstract

The computational capabilities of advanced technologies for high-throughput signal processing are assessed. Graphs for the computational rate per unit power and per unit volume are produced. Emphasis is on VHSIC devices with CMOS and GaAs technologies. The study indicates an ever worsening I/O bottleneck. Power dissipation per chip or per unit volume is found to increase for advanced technologies, while the total power dissipation per a given task is found to decrease. Directions for future research are identified.
