Abstract

Some smokers of low-yield cigarettes derive higher levels of 'tar', nicotine, and carabon monoxide (CO) than advertising or government smoking-machine assays have led them to believe. Ventilation holes in the filter cause each puff of smoke to be diluted with air. The reduction of 'tar', nicotine, and CO yields is a complex issue, and several manipulations are used in most modern cigarettes to reduce yields.
