Abstract
This work presents an application in which a PC-based remote monitoring test capability has been successfully implemented. The structure being monitored and the instrumentation used are briefly described. Issues regarding input filtering, sampling rate, A/D quantization noise, as well as the important considerations in the selection of the data acquisition noise are discussed. Minimizing hardware allocation conflicts between the normal PC system, the data acquisition system, and the data communication hardware is examined. Following this, the effects of data file size, storage capacity, transmission rate, transmission error rate, and quality of the communication line on overall performance are reviewed. Finally, the lessons learned in this application and considerations that should be addressed in future installation efforts are summarized.
