Abstract
This paper describes the several paradigms that have been developed to solve the problem of recognizing handwritten words. We draw parallels between speech and handwriting recognition and lay the foundation for this research from an AI perspective. We describe the differences in the various methods and show how each is suitable for a particular category of applications.
