Abstract

Intermittent claudication occurs in about one-third of patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease; the decision on type of treatment requires a thorough understanding of the natural history with its associated complications, extent of the involvement, functional capacity, and most importantly risk factor modification to decrease cardiovascular mortality. The type and timing of intervention should be highly individualized with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life with a low early and long-term morbidity and mortality.
