Out-of-plane seismic behavior of brick masonry walls of typical turn-of-the-century North American residential buildings

Abstract

Sample brick masonry walls only tied with nails to their timber backing were extracted from an existing building and tested on a shake table. Out-of-plane resistance of this type of construction widely used at the turn-of-the-century was measured, and compared with performance when retrofitted using anchors or fiberglass strips.
